For this Culinary Arts College the main design focus was in the site development and the building material which was steel. Using conceptual design techniques during this studio, I developed the site and campus layout according to my own experience and interpretation of walking through the foothills of South carolina. The challenge was trying to replicate and mimic the natural environment into the built in a way that was functional and appropriate. Obstructing trees, open fields and vistas are elements I brought to this walking campus. Through materials, paths, and elevation changes, the Culinary College was created.
The other design focus was in the steel materiality. Emulating my walk in the woods, I used the steel in a similar fashion to a forest canopy. Providing shade, shadows and shelter, I attached a steel-fin to each academic building to a similar effect. The Culinary College is a walking campus and because of the subtle changes in elevations in the foothills, all buildings contain ADA ramps to achieve a similar fluid entrance into the spaces. The buildings themselves are pod-like steel boxes cladded with vertical wood planes and glass, to give the impression of learning and cooking in the outdoors.
